Shaomei is a research scientist at Facebook AI. Coming from an interdisciplinary background, she is interested at addressing real-world problems through computational methods and people-centered design. Her current work focuses on designing and building AI-powered technologies for people from marginalized and under-resourced communities, for example, people with disabilities. She led the team that designed and built Automatic alt-text on Facebook.
Shaomei was previously part of the Core Data Science team in which she studied how opinions and behaviors emerge, spread, and fade in social media, using network algorithms, statistical models, natural language processing techniques, and social science theories.
Shaomei publishes her work in CHI, WWW, CSCW, and ICWSM. She frequently reviews papers and serves in the program committee for CHI, WWW, ICWSM, and ASSETS.
Shaomei received my Ph.D. in Information Science from Cornell University, and her M.S. and B.S. in Computer Science from University of California, Santa Barbara and Tsinghua University, respectively.
