I am a Research Manager in Protect & Care. I support a team that works on issues that impact the safety and welfare of people on Facebook. I came to Facebook from Columbia University in the city of New York, where I was the William B. Ransford Professor of Sociology and Global Thought (1999-2016). My research has focused on two areas: Social life in cities, particularly underground economies and marginal groups; Creative agencies and advertising. My published books include, Gang Leader for a Day (Penguin), Floating City (Penguin), Off the Books (Harvard) and American Project (Harvard). My stories and writings have appeared in The New York Times, Fast Company, This American Life, The American Prospect and The Washington Post.
