Facebook Hosts Distinguished Faculty

Facebook research teams are welcoming over 40 distinguished academics from the US and Canada to our headquarters in Menlo Park today to collaborate and exchange ideas at the 2016 Menlo Park Faculty Summit.

Be sure to join us LIVE at 10am PT for Joaquin Quinonero Candela’s keynote to kick off the summit. As the director of applied machine learning at Facebook, Joaquin also leads our Facebook Academics team. He’ll share his thoughts on the direction of applied machine learning here at Facebook, its relationship/reliance on the infrastructure that you’ll be hearing about the rest of the day, and Facebook’s commitment to research and collaboration.

The agenda for the summit has been designed to focus on three key research topics that are of particular interest to Facebook researchers and the faculty in attendance: Networking, Systems and Databases, and Security. Our teams are keen to share their research findings with the leading experts in academia in attendance at the summit, as well as further the exchange of ideas through rich discussions and ongoing collaborations.

“As someone who researches large-scale distributed systems, I’m excited to talk with Facebook engineers and hear about their technical challenges. Faculty summits are a great way for academics to learn about real-world problems, while sharing new research results that might be surprising to industry.” said James Mickens, associate professor at Harvard University.

“This is the fourth time we’ve hosted faculty on campus at Facebook for a faculty summit and the sharing and exchange of ideas always exceeds my expectations,” said Omar Baldonado, Engineering Director for Facebook Networking Systems. “My team is part of Facebook’s networking software team, responsible for large-scale software systems that model, automate, monitor, and control Facebook’s network, and the value we get out of engagements and collaborations with academic experts in systems is tremendous.”
