Over 30 Facebook and Instagram researchers, engineers, recruiters and academic relations team members are on hand at KDD 2016 in San Francisco, CA this week. ACM SIGKDD brings together over two thousand top data scientists from universities, industry and government entities from around the world, to share their knowledge and advance the application of data science to benefit all aspects of society. Notable topics at KDD this year include crowd sourcing, large scale data mining competitions with over 10,000 participants, personalized advertising, recommender systems and graph mining algorithms that, for example, all power Facebook.
Held in conjunction with KDD, the Mining and Learning with Graphs Workshop features a keynote from Facebook Director of Engineering, Lars Backstrom. Titled, Serving a Billion Personalized News Feeds, Lars will share key learnings from the Facebook feed ranking system which has served over a billion personalized experiences. “To accomplish our goals of delivering the best content relevant to an individual, we do large-scale machine learning to model each person to determine what pages and topics they care about most,” said Backstrom. “We not only work on large-scale machine learning problems, we also strive to understand the value we are creating for people and make sure we’re in alignment with what people want. I am pleased to share our learnings with the broader community to advance knowledge discovery across the field.”
